Maxiga

This is the cutest store on the planet to go for smart and fun little gifts. They have all sorts of wonderful little toys, gag gifts and just creative novelties to make you smile. There is one location at 1204 Lexington Ave (between 81 and 82nd st.), but they have expanded and now have another store at 2233 Broadway (between 79th and 80th). If you have a friend or coworkers birthday and don't know what to get them, I am SURE you will find something here that they will love. Today I bought a book of dirty French words, hehe :X My suggestions is the cactus pens, so cute!! ;D xxo

Peter Woytuk's work on Broadway

I noticed new animal sculptures all over town and wondered if they were a part of a larger project. What an opportunity it must be for Peter Woytuk to have his sculptures displayed literally all down the most famous avenue of all time! Wow. Anyways, the sculptures are pretty cool focusing on natural things like animals, fruits and utility objects. As a whole it has a sort of nostalgia with the animals in bronze, recalling an older time when we actually lived alongside animals compared to only seeing them in zoos now. Its almost like a memorial to the lost species, yet there is Noah's Ark idea that the animals have been immortalized or protected by these metal casts (or imprisoned?). Woytuk uses several black birds or crows in the work as a subject perhaps conjuring the notion of death and the afterlife seen on a larger than normal scale, playing with their proportion. As with the apple symbolism, the crow pecks at the apple perhaps suggesting the death of knowledge or enlightenment. I really enjoy the sculptures compared to the flowers I have seen on Park Ave earlier this year, these have a quirkiness, a question, and curiosity about them. The sculptures will be up along the entire length of Broadway in Manhattan until April 2012. You should see them all! xxo

Okay, I totally love Nicki Minaj and I really love the whole concept of this photo shoot, but I gotta say, its not my favorite. Nicki is fun, spunky and so totally futuristic-like pushing the boundaries of fashion and music. I think this shoot goes against that and makes her look totally awkward. She is not a countess or duchess err whatever. She is a bad a** bi$#* from New York!! This goes to show there is too much attention on celebrities and injecting them into every damn advertising campaign. Let a model be a model, let a fashion designer be a fashion designer and singers should stick to freakin singing. Just because you get a star* to get in on a shoot, doesn't mean that it will work. Sowie :/ I want to see Nicki having fun and just being herself, thats what made us fall in love with her in the first place.. xoxo

I simply adore Yoko Ono. A brilliant conceptual artist, she always makes me think with a underlying compassionate emotional response. This exhibition is super cool. Going into the space there are doors with little messages written discreetly on them, puddles on the floor and bugs on the wall. Like a dream from the twilight zone or perhaps a Hitchcock nightmare, it made me tingle. Holes in the walls allow the voyeur in us to view a sort of alien race, glass sculptures in a desert like environment which brings up an idea of isolation or future we have yet to see.

I love the this restaurant FISH, located on Bleecker St in Manhattan. The staff is friendly and cute, the food is absolutely to DIE for if you like seafood and an overall great dining experience I would totally recommend. The picture above is their oyster special, basically a glass of wine is $6 but if you get a half dozen oysters its $7 for the half-dozen AND a glass of wine. WOW so yummy!! All I have to do is get two glasses of wine in me and a dozen oysters and Im feeling prrreety good after that. check it out! j'adore

I stayed at this funky new hotel that just opened in June called YOTEL. Super futuristic and edgy, its a perfect addition to the New York Hotel/Restaurant/Bar/Event scene. They have self check in kiosk in the lobby along with a robot arm, very a la Alexander McQueen show, that takes your luggage and will store it for you. The room I stayed in was kinda small, but very efficient. There was a queen sized bed that was propped up like a couch and when you pushed a button, would lie down when you are ready to sleep. There was a bunk bed above with a ladder one must use to access it and was totally cool. I appreciated the complimentary coffee on every level along with the fact they did not have single serving shampoos and conditioners, but instead had the products attached to walls in little pumps, very eco friendly and green. The keys to the rooms were just sensor activated and did not require you to put a card in or turn anything. The concierge desk, located on the fourth floor is referred to as "Mission Control" and the food service was in the "Galley" adding to its submarine/spaceship feel over the entire hotel.

They have brunch on Sat and Sun from 11-3 for $35 it is all you can eat and drink!!! Otherwise, they have several dining options, my favorite being the traditional japanese style dining sitting on the floor at long banquet tables. All the dishes are tapas style portions and totally yummy. I recommend the beef tenderloin and the salmon with spinach to eat and the strawberry lychee mojito to drink.

Maurizio Cattelan "ALL" @ the Guggenheim

Wow, what a fantastic show. Going from Nov 4th 2011 to Jan 22, 2012 the Guggenheim will feature a retrospective of Maurizio Cattelan's work from 1989 to the present. Hanging like a mobile in the center of the gallery, the work suspends in the air in a seemingly frenzied chaos. As one moves either up or down the spiral shaped gallery, the works reveal themselves more and more in a fantastic arrangement. It was interesting to see pieces that were originally designed for a wall in a gallery space were transformed into L-shaped wall sections dangling in mid-air and other things intended for other places completely ripped from its context to create this new one, totally site specific.

If you have never seen this artists work, this is the show to see. I have been absolutely IN LOVE with Cattelan ever since I saw the piece entitled "HIM" at Sotheby's a few months ago. Surprising and smart he continues to impress and engage me. xo

The picture above is of the book that is sold at the Guggenheim bookstore for $45 about the entire body of work. I am already almost finished!

A fun interactive installation, the tempura paint drips from the ceiling missing the openings on the floor creating splatters of multi-colored paints all around the floor. The guests are allowed to participate and get into the space and play, adding to the extension of the piece by leaving their own mark. I chose to use the press release as a stamp and created my own self-made souvenir from the show. The other pieces being shown at Gladstone was a giant disco ball in the center of the room hovering above a hole made in the floor of the gallery filled with water that reminded me of some astrological/lunar imagery which was very cool. There was also black mosaic tile pieces in interesting shapes that look like shoulder pads or shells that contained star-like and astrological elements.

At the other location was large boulders with colored metal sheets welded on and large photos with scratches.

Go check it out yourself and tell me what you think. I would like to see the paint room in a few days when all of the paint is turning murky brown from being blended so much. Its pretty now, but its interesting that all the colors, when combined, just turns into muck.

"The Last Werewolf" by Glen Duncan

So I was fortunate enough to get the advanced readers edition of this wonderful book for my birthday from a friend, who shall remain nameless ;) , who works at Random House Books. I had read the review in some other publication before September and sounding fairly promising, I was looking forward to picking it up. I have not jumped on the whole Vampire, Werefolf hype in recent years on television since I don't own a television, but I have been an avid reader of the occult and spooky stories ever since I was a wee lad.

I definitely recommend this book first for the way Duncan elegantly tells his tale, but also for its poignant messages between the lines. The story is dark and clever, yet innately human and romantic. Duncan exposes the reader to details about our own psyches in the most quiet way which inevitably enrich us and strips away the inadequacies or faults revealing the bitter truth about life, death and love. The most memorable snippet is simple: FUCK KILL EAT breaking down, in simple terms, what it means to be close to the core of who we really are as human beings and what we truly value. In the end, it is love that survives.

Perfect for a grown up Halloween...Go read it!!! xoxox

I just finished reading this fun nostalgic pop recap of the Factory days. The book reads like a coversation with a good buddy over coffee. Just like in the spirit of Andy for loving gossip, it feels like I was catching up on years of juicy niblets within the pages. My favorite part was when he was describing he was at a dinner party with Judy Garland and Tennessee Williams and she began singing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" with a mouthfull of spaghetti. On my recent trip to Paris last week I had the experience of flying with no less than Four different airlines during my entire journey. In my experience there has always been a humongous difference with each airline and how they treat their guests. I must say that out of all the flights I endured, the one that stood out the most in excellence was my flight from Paris to Boston on AirFrance. The first thing I could appreciate was the air conditioning from the moment I got on the plane before takeoff. There was no waiting for the plane to move, or taxi, or lineup or anything like that before the air was fully functioning and flowing. Often times it seems other airlines shut off all the engines while just sitting there which leaves the guests completely agitated and uncomfortable. The second thing I noticed was the personal televisions on the back of every seat. They didn’t have the usual prescribed channels that one must flick through repeatedly to find something worth watching, but instead had a variety of movies, television programs, music stations and pay-to-watch programs of every genre to enjoy throughout the eight hour flight. There were pillows and blankets to use for FREE, unlike other airlines that require you to purchase these items now. The staff onboard was no less than, dare I say, the cutest crew I have ever seen. The girls were impeccably groomed, stylish and young, befitting a scene out of “All that Jazz”, Bob Fosse’s “Air-rotica”. I mean, they were totally hott. They served water about a million times and were incredibly attentive throughout the entire flight. Overall if I could fly AirFrance every time I had to take a airplane I would be very happy. The service was great, the technology on the plane was up to date and comfortable and I’m still alive so, well done. J’adore

De Gaulle, Paris airport was the nicest airport I have ever been in. They had tons of chic magazines to take for free, nifty chairs people were sleeping on, coffee machines everywhere, computers with internet service, free WiFi and pay-per-minute massage chairs. The windows were enormous and gave excellent views of the air traffic and goings on at the airport. The gate people were quick and extremely helpful. The parisians know Good Service! Good job

Menu Shopping

Its an interesting thing when you are walking around with friends or family and you are looking for a place to sit and eat in a foreign place. Most of the time, with me, I choose a place purely on the ambiance and the scene it gives me from first glance, while others are more concerned with the details. This leads me to my question: Do you always check the menu outside before you enter a restaurant? The answer for moi is No. If, for some reason I am seated, served some water and given a menu and the choices do not seem appetizing or affordable, I simply order something that I can manage or can afford and go on my merry way. I like the idea of having a drink in one place, eating at another place, walking down the road and then having dessert in a completely different place, then repeat if I need coffee after. For others, they want everything in one package. They do not even look inside the place to see who's there or the decor and just walk right up to the menu to see if they have something they want and if they can afford it. To me this all seems sort of tacky and touristy looking. Imagine observing the scene while you are sitting there having dinner; people walk up, look at the menu, discuss with everyone around, then decide its not for them and walk away which seems weird because you have no idea why they wouldn't eat there orrrrr they do decide they want to eat there and are seated right next to you. At this point you are annoyed because unlike you, who are familiar with the place you are eating at, are now surrounded by newbies who are invading on your local spot. For the people just seated, it feels rather odd and gives off a peculiar feeling whether they can finger it or not. They are totally on the spot. I prefer to walk right in and get a feel for the place through my own experience. I can gather what I can from the interactions once I walk through the door instead of judging a book, in this case a restaurant/bar, by its cover.

I just finished this fantastic book 'Water For Elephants' by Sara Gruen. It took me a little longer than normal to finish a book, about two weeks, but it was a fantastic read. With a backdrop of the circus with love and intrigue as its main characters it turns out being a nostalgic journey into a world few of us have seen or would care to see. The sometimes too real world of the entertainment business is startling and fascinating.

The day I finished the book I went to the movies to see 'The Mechanic" and in the lobby I saw the poster for the upcoming film soon to be out April 22, 2011. Few book to film remakes are ever good, but believe me I will surely see this one. I hope they keep to the story, lets cross our fingers. ;D

Yes its true, the oh so talented Mr. Quentin Tarantino is making the third part of the EpIc KILL BILL movies. Expected to come out in 2013 (lets pray), I am expecting it be as great as the first two films. All of Quentin's movie for me have been amazing, but I have seen the KILL BILL films literally over a hundred times studying everything about them.

I wish they would release the film as one really long film and not as two (and 3) because the movies pick up right where the other left off and I always watch them BAck to Back marathon style. I love the journey B makes. jadore

Why do we do it all? Why do we cover our skin? why do we deface it? Its an interesting look into Reservation culture and issues they face as a community. A definite Recommendation for High Schoolers..

I LOve all of the colored plaid coats in the beginning, the tan coats, the black and white looks and of course the grand finale, the pony (or is it cow print?) coat at the end...

I have noticed this theme somewhere else recently as well. We'll being seeing a lot more in the coming months, Im sure, of the balck and white, dalmatian/cow/pony fur prints ..

Why dont they do a colored cow print jacket? hmmm ;D

I am loving the colored jeans matched with plaid shirts and solid sweaters. I think the colored jeans trend is gonna come back HARD!!!!... well see ;D The black and red color combo is really elegant yet edgy again. NICE!

I am also seeing a lot of mustard and yellows and oranges pop up in unusual places. Keep an eye out for unique accessories or knits in this palette.

This is a book I picked up right after the new year when I tend to get a little introspective and think about the previous year and what I expect for the year to come. I literally could not put this book down for four days until I finished it. Its a wonderful breakdown of the different levels of consciousness and allows the reader to reflect on where they are in their lives emotionally.. This book came at a great time for me and I realized I have really come a long way in the past few years and the things I still need work on are very close to being resolved... I definitely recommend this book to anyone that wishes to examine their place on this planet and where we fit into our own lives we have created for ourselves.

So I saw the new Harry Potter movie which was great, because of course, I have to see each movie now until this epic saga is over damnit, but that being said this movie was such a tease.. Unlike the other films where it felt more like there was a definitive conclusion, at least for that particular 'part' of the epic, this movie felt like it was really only 'half of the end' so to speak. Like I mentioned before, I will definitively be seeing the last film when it comes out, but maybe not in the IMAX experience like I did this most recent time...I took a friend out to a movie and said, "oh i got this, ill pay"............the total for two tickets to IMAX was $38 dollars!!!!!!!!!!!! They have got to be out of their mind! $19 for the price of a movie ticket is outrageous even for me. Trust me I am not the one to usually complain about the cost of inflation because you know if I had it I would be out tomorrow buying the mens HOBO bag at Burberry like Tooommmmmorrow, but this is absurd. I really think our grandparents that spent a dime (like 10 cents) on a movie back in da day would be flipping in their graves. I don't think it right that we have to Pay for Progress. When new technology comes out, such as IMAX and 3D which is now like the industry standard, we as consumers should Not have to bite that bullet. I mean whats in our future? What about when we can touch, smell and be incased in the movie environment in ten years how much will we pay for this experience? 100 dollars? To go to a movie??? get outtta here!
